Taxi fares in Jersey

The Government of Jersey sets the most a taxi can charge on the meter. The current rates have applied since 28 July 2026.

Who sets the fares

Taxi fares in Jersey are regulated. The Minister for Infrastructure sets the maximum a taxi or cab can charge on the meter, in an Order made under the Motor Traffic (Jersey) Law 1935. Driver and Vehicle Standards (DVS), part of the Government of Jersey, licenses taxis, cabs and drivers and deals with complaints.

If a gov.je page shows different figures, the Order on jerseylaw.je is the law in force. Private-hire, chauffeur and coach firms aren't covered by the taxi tariff and set their own prices.

How we estimate

Every fare on taxi.je is worked out the same way, so you can check it:

  1. Distance. We take the shortest driving route by road from OpenStreetMap map data, using the OSRM route planner. Trips start at the Weighbridge taxi rank in St Helier, in front of Jersey Airport, or at Elizabeth Terminal, and end at the place's marked point on the map (usually its entrance or car park).
  2. Fare. We apply the maximum meter rate to that distance: the start charge, which covers the first 1/10 mile, plus the rate per mile for the rest. For example, the airport to St Helier is 4.9 miles. By day that's £4.15 + 4.8 miles × £3.10 = £19.03.
  3. Range. We show from 5% below to 10% above that figure, rounded to the nearest pound, because drivers don't always take the shortest route and the meter counts in steps. So £19.03 shows as £18 to £21.
  4. Time. The route planner's driving time, plus 20% for traffic and junctions.

Not included: waiting time in traffic, booking fees, £2 for each passenger over four, up to 50p for paying by card, and the Christmas and New Year tariff. Private-hire and chauffeur firms set their own prices, so these estimates don't apply to them.

Estimates can be wrong: roads close, routes change and our map point may not be exactly where you're going. The meter, or the price the firm quotes, is what you pay. Tariff from 28 July 2026; distances worked out in October 2026. If you spot a mistake, report an inaccuracy.

Rank fares and booked fares

  • From a rank or hailed in the street: you pay the meter, up to the rates above.
  • Booked by phone or app: firms can add a booking fee on top of the meter, and set their own rates for pre-booked work as long as they publish them. The Jersey Taxi Drivers' Association says its app bookings cost up to 18% more than rank fares. Ask for the price when you book.
  • Chauffeur and limousine cars don't use the meter. They quote a price for the job.

A driver can always agree a lower price than the meter before the trip starts.

Paying

All taxis in Jersey must take cards. A charge of up to 50p can be added for paying by card.

Complaints

Talk to the firm first. If that doesn't sort it, contact Driver and Vehicle Standards at the Government of Jersey on 01534 448600, dvsinfo@gov.je, or the taxi feedback form.
